Revision — 25 October 2026: The original article incorrectly described Decision (EU) 2024/367 as a delegated regulation and drew overly broad conclusions from material names and regulatory dates. Specific alloy approvals, national transition dates, price premiums and claims of a Chinese supply gap have been removed where primary evidence was not established. The publication date and URL are retained. This revised English article and its Chinese counterpart present the same research checklist.
Distinguish the roles of the official documents
The European Commission identifies Directive (EU) 2020/2184 as the EU drinking-water framework, including requirements concerning materials in contact with drinking water.
Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2024/367 establishes European positive lists, including lists of metallic compositions. Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2024/365 concerns testing and acceptance methodologies. They have different functions; a material designation alone is not a complete description of a product’s applicable requirements.
Build a product-specific research file
Begin by recording the intended use, the component, the destination market and whether the product is intended to contact drinking water. Keep those details separate from a general description such as “lead-free brass”.
Then identify the exact composition and the relevant current list entry, together with any conditions attached to it. Check which testing, product documentation and conformity-assessment requirements apply to the particular product. A trade name or a composition reference should not be treated as a substitute for that evidence.
National provisions and transition arrangements also need to be checked against their current official texts and the circumstances of the product. This article does not determine whether any named alloy or supplied product is acceptable for a particular installation.
Turn the research into clear supplier questions
A useful enquiry brings together the product form, drawing revision, dimensions, composition requirements, test methods and proposed batch documentation. Where a supplier proposes a substitute, record the difference and the evidence the buyer needs to assess it.
Material composition, manufacturing capability and product approval are distinct questions. Keeping them distinct helps an exporter or buyer identify what is documented, what is proposed and what still needs confirmation. It does not establish a universal supply shortage or a guaranteed route to market.
